BMWPIO Adapters
From 1988 into 1995 BMW used Pioneer CD changers in several applications. The BMW "rebadged" changer was from Pioneer's CDX-M family of which the CDX-M30 is the most well known member. These changers used Pioneer's M-Bus (not to be confused with Alpine's M-Bus). Of course, when BMW rebadged the unit they tweaked the cable connector pinout a bit. Of course, this "encouraged" customers to buy CD changers for their BMW's from BMW.
This changed when some aftermarket companies started making adapters to "un-tweak" BMW's pinout. AAMP of Florida, Inc. Peripheral Electronics Division developed a line of peripherial interface components. For BMW owners two of their products, the BMWPIO and BMWPIO/M, became very well known.
BMWPIO/M Adapter
This is the adapter commonly used with Pioneer M-Bus CD changers with rectangular chassis connectors such as the CDX-M30. The CDX-M30 has a 13-pin rectangular chassis connector which accepts one end of the BMWPIO/M cable. The other end of the BMWPIO/M cable connects to the pre-wired BMW 14-pin DIN data cable plug in the boot (or trunk).
The BMWPIO/M is comprised of a rectangular 13-pin female connector, a 20 inch (50.8cm) cable, and a round 14-pin female DIN connector. The BMWPIO/M-48 adapter is a variant using a 48 inch (1.22m) cable; all other elements of the adapter are identical.

BMWPIO Adapter
This is the adapter commonly used with Pioneer M-Bus CD changers with round cable plugs such as the CDX-M40. These CD changers do not have the rectangular chassis plug of the CDX-M30, but are nearly identical in most other respects. The CDX-M40, for example, has a round 13-pin plug at the end of a short cable which accepts one end of the BMWPIO cable. The other end of the BMWPIO cable connects to the pre-wired BMW 14-pin DIN data cable plug in the boot (or trunk).
The BMWPIO is comprised of a round 13-pin female connector, a 20 inch (50.8cm) cable, and a round 14-pin female DIN connector. There is also a seperate blue wire that should be connected to switched +12vdc. This is typically linked to the circuit used for energizing accessories.
